Now that it’s officially summer, sailing enthusiasts have a boatload of regattas to look forward to – but, with so many options, how should you pick? Whether you own your own watercraft or are simply an admirer, we’ve selected five distinguished boating events that are all equally unmissable.
As well as being nearly 200 years old, the Isle of Wight’s Cowes Week regatta boasts some impressive figures: hosting up to 40 daily races and more than 60,000 spectators, it’s the largest sailing regatta of its kind in the world.1 Both professionals and amateurs alike gather here to enjoy live entertainment and a thrilling atmosphere as well as the boat shows.
You can bring the whole family to the Bassenthwaite Regatta Week to enjoy a diverse boating itinerary, featuring a mix of fleet and handicap racing. Set in the north of England, in the Lake District, the regatta hosts a range of social events and entertainment, which you can enjoy amidst breathtaking views.
It’s the only regatta in our list not hosted in the UK, so you know that it must be special. Frequently hailed as the most beautiful regatta to grace the Mediterranean, Les Voiles de St Tropez unites superyachts for a week of racing under the summer sun. This year’s event also marks its 25th anniversary, so expect a show you’ll remember.
Enjoy both rowing and sailing for the whole week at the Dartmouth Royal Regatta. Set in picturesque South Hams, Devon, this regatta is known as much for its social scene as it is for its sailing, in particular the Royal Regatta Ball. Yachts, keelboats, sports boats and dinghies are all welcome here.
Visited by more than 300,000 people each year, the Henley Royal Regatta needs no introduction. Perched on the River Thames, this rowing regatta features more than 300 races and a host of glittering events over the course of a week.
